Hannon's, the longtime pub holding court on downtown Waukesha’s West Broadway, has been sold and will stay open under new ownership as its namesake steps away. Owner Mark Hannon is retiring after roughly 40 years at the helm, and a retirement party in his honor is set to kick off at 1 p.m. on July 12.
The sale surfaced publicly last Wednesday, and regulars had already spotted a big clue that change was coming: the bar’s iconic sign came down in early June, according to Greater Milwaukee Today. That reporting notes the buyer intends to keep the bar running and that organizers are putting together a public send-off for Hannon.
New owners, same bar
For anyone worried Hannon's might vanish overnight, local listings still show the bar active, and the pub’s own site continues to post regular hours and a menu, indicating it is operating through the ownership handoff, per Hannon's website. Longtime patrons say the Friday-night rhythm and jukebox-fueled crowd have been part of downtown’s backdrop for years.
Retirement party and weekly music
Hannon’s retirement bash is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on July 12, and the business plans to keep sponsoring a weekly Friday-night live band, according to Greater Milwaukee Today. The transition looks more like a careful pass of the keys than a teardown, with the new owners poised to keep the pub’s programming and neighborhood role intact.
Downtown fixture heading into a new chapter
Downtown Waukesha continues to list Hannon's among its core businesses and notes that its sign has long been a familiar Broadway landmark, making the sale a notable moment for neighbors and small-business watchers, per Downtown Waukesha. Local boosters say that hanging on to live music and late-night hours is key for foot traffic as Broadway keeps evolving.
For now, the sale closes a major chapter for a veteran local operator while keeping a neighborhood institution in place. Hannon's and its new owners plan to mark the change together at the July 12 gathering.
