Harris Health is giving several of its walk-in same-day clinics a major upgrade, converting them into expanded urgent care centers across Harris County. The system is adding on-site imaging, lab work and pharmacy services in a bid to keep non-emergency patients out of packed emergency rooms and to speed up care for semi-acute problems like ankle X-rays, IV fluids or minor procedures when a primary care appointment is nowhere in sight.
Where to Go
Right now, Harris Health operates urgent care at its Outpatient Center on the LBJ campus and at Strawberry Health Center in Pasadena. Both list walk-in hours Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. According to Harris Health, these clinics offer 15-minute visits, rapid lab testing and virtual-care options for patients who would rather log on than sit in a waiting room.
What They Can Treat
The expanded urgent care centers are set up to handle same-day X-rays and select imaging, IV fluids and medications, and minor procedures such as stitches and abscess care, along with joint injections. Some locations will also provide rabies vaccinations, as reported by Community Impact. The outlet notes that select urgent care sites will include on-site laboratory and pharmacy services so patients can get tests and treatment in a single visit instead of juggling multiple stops.
Why Harris Health Is Making the Switch
Sheterra Jenkins, Harris Health’s senior operations manager for urgent care, told Community Impact that clustering services such as radiology and pharmacy in one place cuts down on extra trips and helps keep patients out of crowded emergency centers. "Urgent care helps patients too sick to wait weeks or months for their regular doctor, but not sick enough for the emergency room," Dr. Joaquin Villegas told the outlet, summing up the niche these clinics are meant to fill.
Timeline and Planning
Harris Health’s board materials show the system plans to convert more same-day clinics over the next several years. Those documents describe a Pasadena consolidation that will turn the Monroe Same Day Clinic into an urgent care site, with operations targeted to start in 2027. The same materials also list Sunset Heights among the locations slated for expansion under the system’s multi-year ambulatory plan, as outlined in Harris Health board materials.
Training and Partnerships
The urgent care centers are not just for patient visits, they are also part of Harris Health’s academic pipeline. Baylor College of Medicine lists Harris Health among its affiliates, and UTHealth’s McGovern Medical School notes a long-running affiliation that places physicians, residents and fellows in Harris Health clinics. That academic link is part of the system’s plan to pair hands-on medical education with day-to-day patient care.
Before You Go
Patients heading to one of these urgent care centers should bring a valid ID, any insurance or financial-assistance documents and a list of current medications. For non-life-threatening problems that still feel urgent, Harris Health’s expanded urgent care network is positioned as a quicker alternative to hospital emergency centers. Patients can call the system’s appointment line or check the MyHealth portal to see which options work best before they set out.
