A man was shot in the head Monday evening in Parkchester, leaving him hospitalized and residents on edge along one of the neighborhood’s busiest stretches. The violence broke out on a commercial and transit hub locals say has already seen more than its share of trouble this summer.
What investigators say
Police say the shooting happened just before 8:15 p.m. near Archer Street and White Plains Road. Surveillance footage reviewed by reporters shows a gunman walk up, tap the victim on the head with a firearm, then pull the trigger, according to News 12. EMS rushed the wounded man to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was listed in critical condition as of 9 p.m., the outlet reported. Officers quickly threw up crime-scene tape along the sidewalk as detectives began canvassing the area for clues.
Parkchester's recent pattern
The shooting adds to growing concern along the White Plains Road corridor. In June, a rush-hour bus shooting left a rider critically wounded and put a spotlight on safety for commuters who rely on the area’s packed bus routes. The intersection and surrounding storefronts serve as a regular transfer point for multiple Bronx lines, keeping the sidewalks crowded well into the evening.
Police appeal and next steps
Detectives are now reviewing additional surveillance footage from nearby businesses and asking anyone who saw or recorded the attack to speak up, according to information provided to reporters. People with tips or videos can call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or use the confidential reporting options detailed by the NYPD. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not yet released any suspect description.
