State Route 507 at Vail Road turned into an active crime scene Friday night after a police pursuit ended in a collision that shut down the highway at the Pierce–Thurston county line. Washington State Patrol troopers and Pierce County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded, while WSDOT traffic officials warned drivers to brace for significant closures in the area. Authorities said the chase involved a suspect connected to a first-degree domestic-violence assault.
According to WSDOT Traffic, the agency shared an update from Washington State Patrol District 1 public information officer Trooper Kameron Watts, who said troopers were helping Pierce County deputies with “a collision investigation stemming from a pursuit with a DV Assault 1st suspect.” The post added that Roy Police Department called off the pursuit after the fleeing driver allegedly tried to run over an assisting officer, and lane closures went into effect at the SR-507 and Vail Road junction. The initial update did not report any injuries or identify the suspect.
Key Intersection for Rural Commuters
The SR-507 and Vail Road intersection sits right on the Pierce–Thurston county line and serves as a critical rural link for commuters, freight, and local traffic. A pre-design study from WSDOT notes that roughly 21,600 vehicles travel through the intersection each day, flagging it as a safety priority. The agency’s proposed single-lane roundabout is intended to cut down on severe crashes and smooth traffic through the busy junction.
Crash-Prone Stretch With a Troubling Track Record
The incident fits into a worrying pattern along this part of SR-507. A pursuit that started in Yelm and continued onto SR-507 in July 2025 ended in a fatal crash, reporting by The News Tribune shows, intensifying local pressure for safety improvements on the corridor. The roundabout project was pushed forward in part to respond to those risks.
Troopers, Deputies Work to Reopen the Road
Troopers and Pierce County deputies remained at the scene Friday night while investigators worked to clear SR-507 and sort out exactly how the collision unfolded. The initial update from WSDOT Traffic, which shared the WSP District 1 information, did not include details on injuries, any arrests, or the suspect’s name. Drivers in the area were told to expect delays while lane closures stayed in place.
