A 48-year-old man died early Thursday after his vehicle left the roadway and slammed into a utility pole on West Lake Houston Parkway in northeast Harris County, turning a quiet stretch of asphalt into a fatal crash scene.
Deputies with the Precinct 3 constable's office found the single-vehicle wreck in the 14000 block of W. Lake Houston Parkway, where the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said no other vehicles were involved.
Investigators told ABC13 the man had been traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, failed to maintain a single lane, and ran off the road before hitting the pole. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, and it was very dark with limited street lighting at the time, according to the outlet. Harris County authorities are treating the crash as a single-vehicle investigation handled by the constable's office.
Another Crash On The Same Stretch
This stretch of W. Lake Houston Parkway has seen serious wrecks recently. On June 30, a vehicle that struck a storefront at 19250 W. Lake Houston Parkway left one person dead, as detailed in car slams into Atascocita shop, underscoring simmering safety concerns along the corridor.
Why Speed Matters
Speeding and roadway conditions are common contributors to high-energy collisions that end in serious injury or death. State crash data and traffic-safety materials from TxDOT routinely highlight excessive speed and limited lighting as risk factors on rural and suburban arterials like this one.
CenterPoint Energy was called to inspect the utility pole, and officials told ABC13 that no obvious damage was seen. Harris County investigators say they will release more information as their probe continues; the driver's name has not been made public.
