What started as a neighborhood basketball game at James Finnegan Playground in Southwest Philadelphia turned violent Monday night when gunfire erupted, leaving four people wounded and a community shaken. Three younger players were hit in the lower body, while a middle-aged man mowing nearby was likely struck by a ricochet, according to police. All four victims are reported to be in stable condition, and investigators have taken three persons of interest into custody.
What police say
Inspector DF Pace told NBC10 Philadelphia that the three persons of interest were in or around a black or gray Dodge Charger found near the scene. Officers recovered three firearms from inside the vehicle and a fourth gun from the curb close to the court.
Investigators counted between eight and ten spent shell casings on the ground. The individuals being questioned are believed to be in their late teens, with one possibly under 18. Police have not yet announced any charges or identified a motive, and the investigation remains active.
About the playground
According to the City of Philadelphia, James Finnegan Playground spans 17.7 acres and features basketball courts, play equipment, and a pool. It also hosts youth and community programming and is listed as part of the city's Rebuild initiative aimed at improving public recreation spaces.
Investigators ask for tips
Police are urging anyone who may have video or information about the shooting to contact the Philadelphia Police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477). Investigators are still working to determine whether the suspects were participating in the game or arrived at the court while play was underway, NBC10 Philadelphia reports.
Citywide context
The incident comes as city officials highlight a drop in killings this year alongside ongoing investments in community violence prevention. Reporting by ImpactoMedia notes that as of mid-June the Philadelphia Police Department had recorded 67 homicides in 2026, about one third fewer than during the same period last year. Even with those improving numbers, a shooting at a neighborhood playground is a stark reminder that the toll of gun violence is still very present on city blocks.
