Huntington Bank is preparing to shut down 13 branches across Michigan, trimming its brick-and-mortar presence to roughly 286 locations statewide. About six of the closures will land in metro Detroit, including the Crooks Road branch in Royal Oak, which is scheduled to close on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. The bank says customers in those neighborhoods will still have nearby branches and ATMs to fall back on.

According to the Detroit Free Press, a regulatory filing and a company statement lock in the plan. Huntington has not publicly offered a specific reason for this latest wave of cuts, but it told the paper that “all consolidated branches have another branch within about a 10-minute drive” and that it “plans to make efforts to place impacted colleagues in other roles so they can continue serving customers and communities.” The Free Press also reported the post-closure Michigan branch count of about 286 locations.

Where The Filings Point

Notices filed with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, combined with local reporting, show the closures sprinkled across the state. WXYZ published a list of Michigan sites it said appeared in recent paperwork, including a downtown Detroit location and several branches in other communities. The spread underscores that both urban areas and smaller markets are on the chopping block. Those OCC notices are the formal starting gun for a bank to begin customer outreach and other wind-down steps.

Part Of A Wider Pullback

This is not Huntington’s first big trim. Investor presentations show the bank closed 188 Michigan branches in 2021 during its integration of TCF Bank. Materials filed with the SEC describe the strategy as a pivot toward digital banking while keeping physical locations in markets the company sees as higher opportunity.

Huntington is not alone in pulling back. Other big players are also shrinking their Michigan footprints. Fifth Third has said it will close about 75 branches in the state after its Comerica deal, which would leave it with roughly 227 locations, ClickOnDetroit reported.

What Customers Will See

Huntington told the Detroit Free Press that customers at consolidated branches will have another Huntington location nearby and that the bank will try to move affected employees into other roles. Beyond the Aug. 28 shutdown date for the Royal Oak site, the company has not released a full public timetable, although regulators require advance notice for any branch closure. In most cases, banks keep ATMs and key services running while they steer people to their new home branch.

The closures are expected to unfold over the coming weeks and months as Huntington finishes reviewing branch traffic and overlap. Customers flagged for consolidation should see in-branch postings and mailed notices, and official OCC documents and local coverage remain the most reliable places to find specific locations and dates. This story will be updated as Huntington releases more details.
