A routine moped stop in Inwood on Wednesday abruptly turned violent, ending with two Nassau County police officers injured and a Brooklyn pair in handcuffs. Police say the man and woman riding the moped grew combative when officers moved in, with the woman arrested at the scene while the man bolted on foot. A K-9 unit later tracked him down, and officers say the moped itself was allegedly stolen from New York City.
Police account and arrests
Nassau County police told News 12 Long Island that officers pulled over a man and a woman riding a moped in Inwood when things escalated. The man, identified as Jason Adams, allegedly tried to take off on the moped before ditching it and running away, while the woman, Nicole Demmerele, was taken into custody on the spot.
According to police, both Adams and Demmerele resisted arrest and turned violent during their encounters with officers, leaving two officers hurt. The county's K-9 unit was brought in, located Adams and helped officers arrest him.
Adams is charged with assault, criminal possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. Demmerele is charged with assault, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
How this fits into a pattern
As reported by violent encounters during routine traffic stops, clashes like this have been surfacing around Nassau County in recent months. Local reporting has noted that what begins as a straightforward vehicle or traffic investigation can quickly spiral when suspects resist, sometimes sending officers and civilians to the hospital and complicating later prosecutions with added felony charges.
What to watch
The case remains under active investigation, and prosecutors have not yet announced arraignment dates for either suspect. Court filings and official statements will outline the next steps in the case, and this story will be updated as that information becomes available.
