A modernist church with architectural ties to Frank Lloyd Wright’s circle is getting a new life in Kalamazoo’s Winchell neighborhood, trading its Disciples of Christ roots for a Hindu mandir and community center.
The property at 2208 Winchell Avenue, long home to a Disciples of Christ congregation, has been sold to a local affiliate of the international BAPS organization. The group plans to convert the building into a Hindu mandir and community hub, preserving a rare midcentury religious structure while shifting its use to serve a growing Hindu congregation. Neighbors and preservation-minded residents are watching closely to see how the project balances its notable architecture with new programming.
Public real estate listings show the property at 2208 Winchell Ave. closed this month for about $1.3 million. According to Zillow, the sale was recorded on June 5 at $1,300,000. City documents and local reporting identify the purchaser as BAPS Kalamazoo LLC, an affiliate tied to the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, per MLive.
BAPS Plans Minimal Exterior Changes
Anand Soni, who is helping organize the Kalamazoo congregation, confirmed the purchase and told MLive that “the exterior will remain largely unchanged.” Instead, the group is focusing on modest interior updates such as new carpeting, paint, and reconfigured seating.
Once opened, the building will serve as a mandir, or place of worship, and a community hub for classes and events. Organizers expect regular weekly gatherings along with larger crowds for festivals and holidays, which means a previously quiet church campus is likely to see more activity as the calendar fills up.
Alden B. Dow’s Local Work
The building was designed by Alden B. Dow, the Midland-based architect often described as a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, and it has drawn attention for its midcentury modern architecture. The Kalamazoo Public Library lists Dow’s Winchell Avenue church among his local projects and situates it within the neighborhood’s modernist heritage. The library’s local-history notes highlight Dow’s work around Winchell, a pedigree that helped draw interest from nonprofit and faith-based buyers when the property went on the market earlier this year.
Where Kalamazoo Fits In BAPS’ Network
The sale plugs Kalamazoo into BAPS’ existing Midwest footprint, which includes BAPS centers in Sterling Heights and Canton, and links the city to the organization’s broader North American network. BAPS North America lists Robbinsville, New Jersey, as the organization’s North American headquarters.
BAPS mandirs typically offer worship services, cultural programming and educational activities, and the organization states that its centers welcome visitors of all backgrounds. The Winchell Avenue site is expected to follow that model while adapting to its specific neighborhood context.
Size, Site And What Comes Next
Commercial listings show the Winchell property sits on roughly 3.8 acres and includes about 18,300 square feet of finished space across a main level and a fully finished lower level. LoopNet describes the parcel layout and listing history.
Organizers say they plan to preserve the building’s character while tailoring the interior for worship, education and community events. For nearby residents, that likely means more people on foot and more cars in the lot, especially around major festival dates, as the former church settles into its new role as a regional spiritual and cultural hub.
