Kappa Alpha Psi is bringing its national convention back to Baltimore in summer 2027, and downtown is getting ready for a serious crowd. The fraternity's 88th Grand Chapter Meeting is expected to pack the Convention Center and surrounding hotels for days of sessions, reunions and public events along the waterfront.
The fraternity's official calendar lists the 88th Grand Chapter Meeting for July 6–11, 2027, in Baltimore, according to Kappa Alpha Psi. The national office's events page is already telling members and vendors to save the dates as planning ramps up.
Local coverage estimates the weeklong gathering could bring more than 20,000 attendees to the city, a surge that would mean serious hotel bookings and restaurant traffic during convention week. As reported by CBS Baltimore, organizers say floorspace, hospitality and nightlife around the Inner Harbor will be in high demand.
What It Means For Baltimore
City and state leaders are pitching the convention as both a civic win and an economic shot in the arm, framing the week as a showcase for local museums, food and cultural attractions. "When the conference comes here, we have an opportunity to fill up every hotel, every restaurant," State Sen. Antonio Hayes said, per WBAL.
New Rules For Side Events
Lawmakers in Annapolis have already moved to streamline the nightlife and ticketed parties that tend to orbit a convention this size. The General Assembly authorized a special related-event promoter permit tied specifically to the Kappa gathering. According to the Maryland General Assembly, applicants for these related events must secure Visit Baltimore's consent and any required city special-event permits before they can sell tickets or stage large public gatherings.
Kappa Week Kicks Off
To build momentum, the Baltimore Alumni Chapter is hosting a pre-convention "Kappa Week" of public events this month, including a "Taste of Baltimore" food showcase, community service projects, and a gala for the fraternity's Guide Right mentoring program. According to WBALTV, the fraternity will hold a national press conference at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum on July 9, with Mayor Brandon Scott and Visit Baltimore leadership slated to attend.
What Locals Should Expect
Most official programming will be centered at the Baltimore Convention Center, which regularly handles large trade shows and multi-floor exhibitions, according to the Baltimore Convention Center. Businesses and transit operators say they are already coordinating hotel blocks, vendor outreach and crowd plans as the city prepares for a packed convention calendar in 2027.
Organizers describe the gathering as more than a conference and a chance to spotlight Baltimore's cultural institutions while building long-term partnerships with national organizations. City leaders say the 2027 meeting will be a test of Baltimore's ability to welcome major Black-led gatherings and could influence how other national groups view the city as a future host.
