An afternoon ride through Cobb County ended in tragedy Saturday when a 23-year-old Kennesaw man was killed after his motorcycle left the road and hit a tree near a Marietta intersection. Police identified the rider as Adrian Villalobos. Investigators say he had been traveling east on Church Road, approaching Saddlebrook Creek Drive, when he lost control and the bike struck a tree. First responders pronounced Villalobos dead at the scene while crash investigators documented the wreck.
According to Atlanta News First, the collision happened just after 2 p.m. on July 4. A preliminary review indicates Villalobos lost control of a 2026 Yamaha YZF890 for reasons that are still under investigation. The Cobb County Police Department’s STEP Unit is leading the probe into the single-vehicle crash.
The timing of the wreck lines up with what national safety experts have been warning about for years. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Fatality Facts report notes that 6,228 motorcyclists were killed nationwide in 2024 and that deaths tend to cluster between May and September, when more riders are on the road. IIHS provides the latest federal crash data and trend analysis for motorcycles.
Investigation and tip line
The crash remains under active investigation, and detectives are asking anyone who saw the wreck or captured video in the area to contact the Cobb County Police Department STEP Unit at (770) 499-3987. As reported by Atlanta News First, investigators have not yet released any findings related to speed, possible impairment or helmet use as they work to reconstruct what happened in the moments before impact.
Local crash patterns
Cobb County’s own safety data paints a stark picture of how vulnerable riders are on local roads. The county’s safety plan finds motorcycles account for roughly 1% of non‑interstate crashes but about 13% of crashes classified as severe. Between 2018 and 2022, the county recorded 36 motorcycle fatalities and 210 serious injuries. Many of those serious crashes happened within 100 feet of intersections, a pattern the technical report says makes intersections a priority target for safety improvements; details are laid out in the Cobb County Safety Action Plan.
Authorities are urging the public not to speculate about the cause of Villalobos’ crash while the STEP Unit completes its work and to share any eyewitness accounts or video with investigators. This story will be updated if Cobb County Police release additional information.
