An overnight call for help in Kissimmee turned violent early Wednesday when an Osceola County sheriff's deputy shot a man during a struggle inside a home on Marcos Circle, according to officials. The 911 call came in just after 2 a.m., reporting a family member in the middle of a mental-health episode. Deputies say the encounter became physical before shots were fired.
The man was airlifted to a hospital and was reported to be conscious and alert. The deputy and others at the home were not injured.
According to FOX 35 Orlando, the sheriff’s office said in a release that an adult male got into a physical altercation with the deputy at the Marcos Circle home and was shot during the struggle. The agency noted the deputy is OK and reported no additional injuries at the scene.
As reported by ClickOrlando, deputies say the man remained conscious and alert when he was flown to a hospital. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to the scene to investigate, and the sheriff’s office told ClickOrlando it plans to hold a media briefing on the incident.
State Investigators Step In
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement often responds to officer-involved shootings at the request of local agencies and typically does not comment while investigations are active, the agency's press office says. Per the FDLE press office, investigators will gather evidence and interview witnesses as part of an outside review of the circumstances.
Rising Tension Around Local Deputy-Involved Incidents
Osceola County has seen several high-profile deputy-involved incidents this year, including a February shooting inside a Poinciana Walmart that prompted an FDLE review. WFTV and other local outlets have also been tracking residential shootings in Kissimmee this summer, including a July 5 neighborhood case on Marta Circle previously covered as a Marta Circle domestic dispute.
The sheriff’s office says the Marcos Circle case remains active and that more details will be released at the planned briefing. Anyone with information or video is asked to contact the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (407) 348-2222 or submit a tip through the agency’s website. This story will be updated as officials release additional information.
