Orlando International Airport is giving its longtime digital mascot a body. Annie the Astronaut, who has guided travelers through MCO's terminals as an animated figure on video screens since 2017, will appear in person for the first time during a public unveiling ceremony on Thursday, greeting passengers, posing for photos, and marking a new chapter for one of the busiest airports in the country.
The ceremony takes place in the Level 3 atrium near the Hyatt fountain area in Terminal A/B, at the airport's address of One Jeff Fuqua Blvd. in Orlando, according to WFTV. The event will include remarks, mascot appearances from community partners, interactive activities, themed giveaways, and photo opportunities for travelers who stop by.
Annie will pose for photos and greet travelers as an in-person mascot, according to the same report, and going forward she is expected to serve as an ambassador at airport and community events throughout Central Florida. That marks a shift from her original role: since her debut, Annie has assisted travelers on-screen with wayfinding, security guidance, and general passenger information.
From Screen Guide to Award-Winning Checkpoint Companion
Annie's story at MCO actually stretches back nearly a decade. The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority first introduced her in November 2017 as a digital ambassador across the airport's video display walls, brought in to help entertain and inform travelers during peak holiday crowds, according to Osceola News. The astronaut design was chosen deliberately, paying homage to Central Florida's Space Coast aerospace heritage and evoking themes of exploration meant to ease travel stress, per the same outlet.
Annie's digital presence is built on the Passenger360 content management system created by Orlando-based agency Synect, which operates the character across more than 2,100 digital displays spanning MCO's Terminals A, B, and C as well as the airport's train station, according to Retail Customer Experience. Synect has developed more than 100 original animated characters for that system, illustrating the scale of the digital infrastructure behind Annie's expanding role.
Last August, MCO gave Annie a more ambitious job: an animated 3D experience called “Annie's Airport Journey” launched on LED video walls at the West Security Checkpoint, displaying real-time TSA wait times, 3-1-1 liquids rule reminders, and bin divestment tips, as reported by Runway Girl Network. That project featured eight custom terminal scenes rendered with Maya and Cinema 4D software. In February, the checkpoint display earned international recognition, winning Creative Excellence in Helpful Information and a High Commendation for Immersive and Experiential Environments at the 2026 Digital Signage Awards in Barcelona, jointly presented to GOAA and Synect.
A Sensory Room and a Growing Airport
Annie's brand also anchors an accessibility feature at MCO. In June 2025, airport leaders opened Annie's Space Sensory Room on Level 3 of Terminal A, a space-themed Snoezelen Multi-Sensory Environment designed to help neurodiverse travelers manage sensory overload before security, according to a press release from Orlando International Airport. The room operates daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The live mascot's debut arrives as MCO's passenger numbers continue to climb. Data published by Airports Council International North America and cited by BlogMickey.com shows Orlando International Airport served 57,675,573 total passengers in 2025, climbing from ninth to seventh busiest airport in the United States even as North American airport traffic overall declined by 0.7%. MCO also held its title as Florida's busiest airport for 2025, outranking Miami International Airport with a 0.8% increase in passenger volume from 2024, according to WFTV, and ranked as the 25th busiest airport in the world.
Much of that growth came from international travel. The airport's passenger growth in 2025 was driven by an 8% rise in international travelers, supported by new nonstop transatlantic routes to Munich, Madrid, and Paris, per WDWMagic, even as domestic travel saw a slight dip.
Part of a Larger Vision for MCO
Annie's in-person debut also lines up with a broader capital investment push at the airport. The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Board approved a master plan called “Elevating MCO & ORL: The Vision Forward” in October 2025, calling for renovations to Terminal A and B, a new baggage system, and 8,000 additional parking spaces by 2030, according to the airport's own release. The plan is aimed at modernizing passenger flow across all terminals as MCO's traffic keeps growing.
For now, the milestone is a simpler one: a character travelers have watched on screens for years steps into the terminal in person. Thursday's ceremony gives Central Florida families, first-time flyers, and frequent MCO travelers alike a chance to meet Annie face to face, alongside mascots from community partners taking part in the celebration.
