Maui wildfire survivors are getting a closer look at who might actually rebuild their homes.
The County of Maui Office of Recovery will host a “Meet Our General Contractor” open house on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Office of Recovery’s Lahaina Resource Center in the Lahaina Gateway shopping center at 325 Keawe Street, Suite 102B in Lahaina. Homeowners who lost primary residences in the 2023 wildfires and have not yet started rebuilding are strongly encouraged to show up, along with residents who already have permits, have seen income changes since the disaster, or simply do not know how to get the process moving.
Meet the contractor and preview designs
As reported by Maui Now, representatives from Goodfellow Bros., the general contractor selected for the County’s Ho‘okumu Hou single-family reconstruction program, will be on site so homeowners can walk through what rebuilding would actually look like. Sample home designs, 3D models, renderings and floor plans will be set out for review, and program staff will be available to field questions about construction timelines and what comes next.
How much assistance and who qualifies
The Ho‘okumu Hou Single-Family Homeowner Reconstruction Program offers eligible households up to $1.2 million to rebuild a primary residence destroyed in the 2023 wildfires and is open to households earning up to 140 percent of the area median income. Applications remain open through August 2026, as outlined on the Ho‘okumu Hou program page, which also carries floor plans and design options for would-be applicants.
Where to get help and how to apply
As detailed by the County of Maui Office of Recovery, homeowners may still qualify even if they have already received FEMA assistance, insurance payouts or other disaster recovery funds. The Ho‘okumu Hou programs are funded by Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) dollars from HUD. Interested residents can find step-by-step application instructions and resource-center hours in the County news release or by calling the program at 808-865-4007.
Contract conditions and timeline
Procurement records on the Ho‘okumu Hou site show the County issued an intended award to Goodfellow Bros. LLC for design and construction services and list a contract amount of roughly $100,000,000. Those procurement details appear in the program’s document library under Ho‘okumu Hou. The County emphasizes that the intended award and any on-site work are still contingent on required environmental reviews under 24 CFR Part 58 and HUD’s formal Authority to Use Grant Funds, so no final contract execution or construction can begin until those federal clearances are in hand.
What to bring
The County is urging homeowners to bring whatever paperwork they already have so staff can give tailored advice on eligibility and next steps. That includes building permits, insurance documents, FEMA determination letters and recent income records. For more background and coverage of the event, see Maui Now.
