What started as a late Saturday outing on Lake Wylie turned tense when York County deputies were called to the Concord Road bridge after reports that people were trying to jump from the span. The York County Sheriff’s Office quickly reminded everyone that the spot is especially dangerous right now, with lake levels low and rocks and debris lurking just below the surface.
There is another catch for thrill-seekers: deputies said the bridge and the shoreline beneath it sit on Duke Energy property, and anyone found in that area could be hit with trespassing charges.
What the sheriff's post said
According to the York County Sheriff's Office, lake patrol and dive teams were sent to the Concord Road bridge after the call about people attempting to jump. Deputies also urged residents to keep their distance and give crews space while they worked the scene. The post noted that more information would be released once investigators and rescuers wrapped up operations.
Why the Concord Road span is risky
As Duke Energy explains, the company manages much of Lake Wylie’s shoreline under the Catawba-Wateree hydro project and controls access to parts of the reservoir. When water levels drop, what used to be safely underwater can turn into a minefield of exposed rocks and hidden debris, creating shallow or unstable landing spots that make jumping or even casual swimming especially hazardous.
Past incidents at nearby bridges
Lake Wylie has seen its share of tense moments, with multiple searches and recoveries after people entered the water from bridges or unmarked access spots. Local reporting has tracked past drownings and large, multi-agency responses on the lake, including earlier searches at the Buster Boyd Bridge and other nearby locations where deputies and dive teams have been called in.
Enforcement and safety notes
The sheriff’s office reminded the public that anyone found on Duke Energy property in restricted areas can face trespassing charges, a tool deputies use to discourage risky behavior around the water, according to the York County Sheriff's Office. York County’s website also notes that the office maintains a lake patrol and dive team that responds to water rescues and searches, backing up both enforcement and emergency efforts on Lake Wylie.
If you see someone in trouble on the lake, call 911 immediately and give emergency crews room to operate. The sheriff’s office said it will share further details on the Concord Road incident when they are available.
