A tense family dispute that turned deadly in a northwest Las Vegas home has now resulted in a decades-long prison sentence. A Las Vegas man was sentenced Thursday to 12 to 33 years in prison for the 2025 shooting death of his mother's boyfriend, with the chance to apply for parole after 12 years. The case began with a domestic confrontation in a northwest valley home last September and wound its way through local courts over the following months.
According to KLAS 8 News Now, 25-year-old Akili Porter received the prison term in Clark County District Court on Thursday. The outlet reported that prosecutors and the judge weighed the circumstances of the 2025 killing during sentencing and noted that Porter will be eligible for parole after 12 years.
How police say the shooting unfolded
Police say the shooting happened on the morning of Sept. 21, 2025, inside a home on Mount Blackburn Avenue, after multiple 911 callers reported gunfire. In a news release, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers arrived to find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and took Porter into custody at the scene. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Porter was booked on an open-murder charge.
Doorbell video and family accounts
Investigators later reviewed doorbell and surveillance footage that they say shows Porter briefly stepping outside the house, then forcing the door open and firing multiple times, according to KLAS 8 News Now. Arrest documents quoted Porter's mother saying she had been dating the victim for about three years and that Porter had recently left a rehab program; detectives also noted that Porter admitted to drinking the night before the shooting.
Legal status and victim
Porter was arrested on Sept. 21, 2025, and originally booked on an open-murder charge, according to earlier coverage of the deadly argument on Mount Blackburn Avenue. The victim was identified as Jamere Antoine Watley; an obituary posted by Giddens Memorial Chapel lists his death as Sept. 21, 2025. Prosecutors did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the sentence, and court documents note Porter will be eligible to seek parole after 12 years.
