A 62-year-old San Diego man found gravely injured on Nimitz Boulevard in Point Loma last Thursday had been shot and later died at a hospital, according to police. The victim was discovered lying in the roadway north of Famosa Boulevard after a motorist spotted him and called 911. Homicide detectives have since taken over the case, and authorities have not announced any arrests.
How police responded
Officers were dispatched at about 1:50 a.m. after a driver reported a person down in the center median. Medics rushed the man to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to NBC 7 San Diego. Investigators at the scene determined that his wounds did not match what they would expect from a traffic collision, so homicide detectives were called in.
Victim identified and injuries
Authorities later identified the victim as 62-year-old Darrell Cogdill. Hospital staff found traumatic injuries to his upper body, including a gunshot wound, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. San Diego Fire-Rescue medics had performed life-saving efforts on Nimitz Boulevard before Cogdill was taken to the hospital, the outlet reported.
Road closures and scene processing
As detectives documented evidence, Nimitz Boulevard was shut down in both directions between West Point Loma Boulevard and Tennyson Street, including the on-ramp from Famosa Boulevard, according to 10News. Officials urged drivers to steer clear of the area and use alternate routes while the scene was processed.
Police appeal for information
Acting homicide Lt. David Garren asked anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 888-580-8477, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects and no arrests have been reported.
"The injuries were not consistent with being struck by a car and this appears to be a targeted attack, not random," Sgt. David Garren said, according to NBC 7 San Diego. Detectives are canvassing the surrounding neighborhood and reviewing surveillance footage as the investigation continues.
