Intersection has a history of safety concerns
The intersection of Airport Boulevard and Oak Springs Drive has already been on the city’s radar for safety upgrades. As outlined by the City of Austin, the area is slated for interim and long-term improvements, including traffic-signal and crosswalk upgrades.
That stretch of Airport Boulevard is part of broader corridor planning tied to the 2016 Mobility Bond, which flagged it as needing pedestrian and intersection work. Planners and traffic-safety advocates have repeatedly pointed to high-speed, high-volume corridors like Airport Boulevard when pushing for engineering changes to cut down on serious crashes.
Where this crash fits in
APD said this incident brings Austin’s 2026 fatal-crash count to 41. Police compared that figure with 2025, when 48 fatal collisions resulted in 52 deaths, according to the Austin Police Department.
The victim has so far been described only as an unidentified Black male. Detectives are still trying to piece together what happened and are looking for witnesses and any video that might help reconstruct the crash.
Anyone who saw the collision or has relevant dashcam or security footage is urged to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111. This story will be updated as authorities release more information.
