Storms rolled through downtown Atlanta on Saturday and stopped the party before it even started, forcing organizers to delay the opening of the FIFA Fan Festival at Centennial Olympic Park after lightning was detected nearby. Gates had been slated to open at 3 p.m., with programming scheduled to run through midnight.
Organizers announced the delay on social media shortly after 3 p.m. and urged fans to keep an eye on the event’s official channels for updates, according to Atlanta News First. The Fan Festival had been planned to run from 3 p.m. to midnight at Centennial Olympic Park.
Lightning Detected, Officials Cited NWS
The weather call followed reports of lightning in the area, a known risk for large outdoor crowds that can trigger temporary closures in the name of patron safety, according to the National Weather Service. The Peachtree City office has been issuing special weather statements this week about thunderstorms and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.
Weather Has Interrupted Fan Fest Before
This is not the first time stormy skies have cut into Fan Festival plans. Organizers shortened hours on June 18 as severe weather moved toward downtown, as reported by WSB‑TV. The festival also closed early on June 14 amid severe weather warnings, according to Atlanta News First. Those earlier changes included entry cutoffs and ticketing adjustments as organizers coordinated with public safety officials.
What Fans Should Know
Ticket holders should continue to monitor the festival’s official social accounts for the updated gate time. In previous weather-related schedule cuts, guests holding GA+ and VIP tickets were offered refunds, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Expect heavy foot traffic around the park when gates do reopen and plan travel accordingly.
The Fan Festival, part of Atlanta’s World Cup programming, has already been drawing huge crowds, and organizers extended hours earlier this week to meet demand, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting. For now, fans are stuck refreshing social feeds and watching the radar, waiting for the updated start time and the all clear from festival officials.
