What started as a report of an assault with a deadly weapon turned into a tense Wednesday morning standoff at MacArthur Park, where a person who may have been armed barricaded inside a public restroom as officers surrounded the area.
Uniformed officers and tactical units formed a perimeter around the restroom while crisis negotiators worked to persuade the person to come out.
How The Restroom Standoff Began
Police responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon just west of downtown Los Angeles, according to NBC Los Angeles. Officers said the individual appeared to simulate holding a gun before running into the park restroom and refusing to exit.
Details about the reported assault and whether anyone was injured were not immediately available as police continued to manage the unfolding situation, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Recent Crackdowns Around The Park
The standoff unfolded against the backdrop of a broader law enforcement focus on MacArthur Park. In recent weeks, federal and local authorities have carried out high-profile operations aimed at open-air drug dealing and gang activity in the area.
A June sweep cleared the park and led to multiple arrests as officials pledged to clamp down on fentanyl sales and public drug use, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Fencing Plans And Neighborhood Concerns
City leaders have floated a set of changes at MacArthur Park that include an 8-foot metal fence and other upgrades meant to improve safety and ease maintenance. Those ideas have been the subject of recent community meetings, LAist reported.
LAPD Capt. Ben Fernandes told LAist that once those changes are in place, officers will help secure the park after hours and maintain stepped-up patrols.
Where It Happened And What Police Advised
MacArthur Park is located at 2230 W. 6th St. in the Westlake neighborhood, across from the Westlake/MacArthur Park Metro station, according to the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
Police were providing updates to the public and asked people to avoid the immediate area while negotiators and patrol units remained on scene, according to NBC Los Angeles.
