Houston robbery detectives are asking for the public’s help tracking down a masked gunman who jumped a store counter and grabbed cash in Southwest Houston on Tuesday, June 2. Investigators released surveillance stills that show a slim Black man dressed in dark clothing, wearing a face covering and sunglasses. According to police, he vaulted the counter, raided the register and then took off running north from the scene.
What investigators released
According to Houston Police Robbery, the case is logged as Houston PD #707770-26. Detectives say the suspect walked into a business in the 8000 block of Fuqua Street at about 9 p.m., pulled a gun, jumped over the counter and scooped cash from the register before bolting north. The Robbery Division also pushed still images and a short wanted notice to social media, and the X link above carries the same photos investigators are circulating. Officers describe the suspect as a skinny Black man wearing dark clothing, gloves, sunglasses and black-and-white tennis shoes.
How to tip and reward
Crime Stoppers of Houston is putting up a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest, and tips must go straight to the nonprofit for callers to stay anonymous and qualify for payment. The group lists its tipline as 713-222-TIPS (8477) and also takes reports by mobile app and through its online portal, per Crime Stoppers of Houston. Investigators are asking residents and nearby businesses to review doorbell and security-camera footage from that night for anyone sprinting north from the store around the time of the holdup.
Legal stakes
Because investigators say the robber showed a firearm during the crime, the department is classifying the case as an aggravated robbery. Under Texas law, a robbery becomes aggravated when a deadly weapon is involved, and prosecutors can pursue a first-degree felony in those situations, according to the Texas statutes.
Why detectives post notices
The Robbery Division has been steadily posting surveillance stills and wanted notices this summer in an effort to speed up suspect identification, a pattern local outlets have been watching. Recent reporting on similar HPD alerts has highlighted how Crime Stoppers rewards can nudge people to come forward, underscoring the department’s strategy of leaning on crowd-sourced tips to move cases along.
Anyone who recognizes the person in the images or has relevant video is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS and reference HPD case #707770-26, or contact the Robbery Division directly at 713-308-0700, according to the Robbery Division’s online post. Tipsters who want to remain anonymous should reach out to Crime Stoppers so their information can be considered for the cash reward.
