A late-morning scare in downtown Bellevue ended with a swift arrest Sunday, after police say a 35-year-old man tried to stab someone along a busy stretch of 110th Avenue Northeast. Officers rushed to the 500 block around 11:36 a.m., quickly zeroed in on a suspect, and booked him on suspicion of second-degree assault. Investigators say several people likely saw what happened and stress there is no ongoing danger to the public, but they still want every possible witness to come forward.
What police are asking for
According to the Bellevue Police Department, officers were dispatched just before noon after reports of an attempted stabbing in the heart of downtown. Responding officers were able to quickly identify a 35-year-old man and take him into custody on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Detectives believe multiple community members were close enough to see the confrontation unfold. The department is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or captured it on video to email [email protected] or call the tip line at 425-452-2564.
Video evidence and public safety
As reported by KOMO News, investigators say the case remains very much active, even though they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety. The station notes that detectives are particularly interested in cellphone video that may show what led up to the attempted stabbing or its immediate aftermath.
Investigation and next steps
Detectives will now sift through witness statements and any video submitted as they work to piece together a clear timeline of events, officials said. Prosecutors will review the investigative file and decide whether to move forward with formal charges.
Police have not released the suspect's name. The Bellevue Police Department says additional information will be shared as the investigation develops.
