A major crash on State Highway 171 near Godley brought traffic to a standstill last night, with the roadway shut in both directions and emergency crews rushing in from multiple agencies. Firefighters reported a motorcycle on fire at the scene, and law enforcement later opened a fatality investigation.
According to a post by the City of Godley Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the 7600 block of Highway 171 at about 6:40 p.m. The department reported the wreck involved two vehicles and one motorcycle and urged drivers to steer clear of the area and use alternate routes while responders worked the scene.
Road Closure And Response
“Hwy 171 is shut down in both directions,” the City of Godley Fire Department wrote, warning motorists to find another way around as firefighters, police and other responders worked the crash. Crews remained on site for several hours while investigators documented the scene and cleared away the wreckage.
Recent Crash History On 171
The same stretch of State Highway 171 has seen deadly collisions in recent weeks. A head-on crash on June 20 between Bynum and Malone killed six people, according to reporting by CBS News Texas. That earlier collision, investigated by state troopers, highlighted the dangers on rural portions of 171.
Rural Roads And Motorcycle Risk
Data from the Texas Department of Transportation show that rural two-lane roads account for a disproportionate share of traffic fatalities in Texas, and motorcycle crashes on undivided rural highways are more likely to result in severe injuries. Higher speeds, limited lighting, and fewer protective barriers all contribute to the higher risk on roads like SH-171.
Investigation And What Comes Next
Local police and other investigators have taken over the scene and are treating the wreck as a fatality investigation, according to the fire department. Officials did not immediately release additional details or the identities of anyone involved, and the City of Godley Fire Department stated it will update the public as more information becomes available.
