What started as a big late-night house party on Murray Drive turned chaotic early Sunday when gunfire broke out and two women were shot, according to police. Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were called to the 1100 block of Murray Drive around 3 a.m., where they found one wounded woman at the scene. A second woman later showed up at a hospital. Both had single gunshot wounds and were treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
According to Action News Jax, Jacksonville Fire Rescue transported a woman in her 20s to a local hospital after she was shot in the right side of her chest. Around 3:10 a.m., the sheriff’s office was notified that a second woman had walked into a hospital with a single gunshot wound to the right side of her lower back. Both victims’ injuries were again described as non-life-threatening.
Suspect detained after briefly fleeing scene
Action News Jax reports that the suspected shooter initially took off from the party but later came back. When she returned, officers took her into custody. The sheriff’s office said investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and stated that there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.
How to contact investigators
Detectives are still working to piece together what happened and who saw what. The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information to call its tip line at 904-630-0500, email [email protected], or contact First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Investigators say tips, along with any video or photos from the party, could be crucial as they track down additional details.
Context
This house-party shooting adds to a troubling string of party and street gatherings in Jacksonville that have ended in gunfire this year. In February, four people were wounded at a street party on the Eastside, part of a larger pattern of large crowds turning violent, as reported by News4JAX. Neighbors and community leaders have repeatedly called for cooler heads at big gatherings and urged people to share tips and video with detectives instead of confronting armed suspects on their own.
