Late Wednesday in North Philadelphia, a storm of bullets turned the area around the Richard Allen Homes into a crime scene stretching across multiple blocks, leaving a 24-year-old man dead and a 30-year-old man wounded. Investigators say they collected nearly 60 spent shell casings across two locations about a block apart, a volume that strongly suggests a shootout rather than a single-sided ambush. Police say the surviving victim is expected to recover as detectives work the neighborhood for witnesses and video.
Investigation underway
According to NBC10, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said officers were called just before midnight to the 800 block of West Reno Place and arrived to what he described as an "extensive scene" that spread across nearby blocks. Investigators recovered about 58 spent shell casings from two different calibers and believe shots were fired from two separate positions roughly a block apart. Small said several parked vehicles were hit by stray rounds as detectives tried to piece together how the exchange unfolded.
Victims and scene
Officers found a 24-year-old man in the rear of a Buick with gunshot wounds to his back; he was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to 6abc. A 30-year-old man was discovered on the 900 block of Parrish Street with a gunshot wound to his lower leg and is expected to survive. Police have not announced any arrests, and no firearms have been recovered from the scene so far.
Police search for video and witnesses
Housing police told investigators there are no on-site housing cameras that cover that section of the Richard Allen Homes, so detectives are asking residents to check doorbell and nearby security cameras for any footage that might show the shooters, KYW Newsradio reports. Officers say they plan to interview community members and the surviving victim as they work to reconstruct the sequence of events. Police are urging anyone with video or information to share it directly with detectives instead of posting it online.
Where this fits locally
The shooting comes on the heels of other isolated late-night gunfire in sections of North Philadelphia this spring, highlighting how quick bursts of violence can ripple across multiple blocks with little warning. Local coverage earlier in May noted similar overnight scenes where shell casings littered the streets, a pattern documented in reports such as overnight bullets fly and other outlets.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or call 215-686-TIPS (8477), according to 6abc. NBC10 additionally reports that a reward has been offered for information leading to arrests, and investigators say tips can be submitted anonymously.
