A Friday night motorcycle ride on North Academy Boulevard ended in a fatal crash after the rider apparently failed to handle a curve and went off the roadway in northeast Colorado Springs, according to investigators with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD). The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and detectives are looking into whether speed played a role.
Crash details
According to local TV station KOAA, the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of North Academy Boulevard near Constitution Avenue. CSPD's preliminary investigation found that the rider was traveling northbound, did not successfully negotiate a curve and left the east side of the road. The El Paso County Coroner will release the rider's name at a later time, KOAA reported.
Response and investigation
The Gazette reported that dispatchers received a 911 call at 8:39 p.m., and first responders pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene. Police told the paper that they are considering speed as a possible contributing factor as the investigation continues.
Statewide safety context
Officials say the crash comes during a riding season that has already seen a heavy toll on motorcyclists statewide. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported that Colorado recorded 165 motorcycle fatalities in 2024 and 148 in 2025, citing speed and impairment as major contributors. CDOT urges riders to wear helmets and ride within their limits to lower the risk of fatal crashes.
