An early morning confrontation in Jacksonville’s Norwood neighborhood ended in deadly gunfire and an arrest, authorities said, after a man was found shot to death on Calvert Street over the holiday weekend.
Police say a 36-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man got into an argument on Calvert Street in the early hours of Sunday. Witnesses told investigators the dispute escalated until the woman pulled a gun and fired several shots, then left the area. Patrol officers arrived around 3:57 a.m. and found the man unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken into custody a short distance away on Monday and now faces homicide-related charges, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
According to News4JAX, the suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Kala Murrell and the victim as 40-year-old Robert Miller. JSO told the station Murrell was arrested Monday and charged with murder and tampering with evidence. Detectives believe Murrell and Miller knew each other but have not said what might have sparked the deadly encounter.
As Action News Jax reported, officers were called to the 800 block of Calvert Street at about 3:57 a.m., where they found Miller suffering from gunshot wounds. Witnesses told investigators the shooting followed an altercation, and several people at the scene were detained while detectives processed the area, collected physical evidence and tried to sort out conflicting accounts. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is asking anyone with information to call 904-630-0500, email [email protected] or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
Fourth of July Weekend Violence
The Norwood killing was one of several violent incidents that turned Jacksonville’s Fourth of July weekend into a grim tally of gunfire, with at least two people reported dead across the city, local outlets have noted. Coverage that tracked multiple, apparently unrelated shootings as celebrations wound down shows detectives in several cases are still working to piece together what led up to the bursts of violence, reviewing witness statements and combing through surveillance footage.
Charges And Next Steps
Murrell has been charged with murder and tampering with evidence, according to News4JAX, and remains in custody while detectives continue their work on the case. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges directly in court or take the case to a grand jury for an indictment. No court filings were available at the time of reporting.
Anyone with information about the Norwood shooting is urged to contact JSO at 904-630-0500, email [email protected] or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
