New York City scored a nearly perfect summer morning on Wednesday, with clear skies, a touch of humidity, and comfortable temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. Light northerly breezes and mostly sunny skies will stick around as the day warms to a high near 78, setting up a calm, pleasant day before the weather starts to turn more unsettled later in the week.
Afternoon Outlook
This afternoon stays solidly in the “no complaints” category: plenty of sunshine, highs around 78, and a gentle southeast wind around 3 to 7 mph. Skies remain mostly clear tonight as temperatures dip to about 70, with winds swinging around to the southwest overnight.
Storms Possible Thursday And Friday
Starting Thursday, the atmosphere gets a bit more restless. A weak trough and passing disturbance will nudge up the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and again on Friday. The best shot at getting caught in a downpour will be across the southern half of the metro, including New York City and northeastern New Jersey.
Rain chances sit at roughly 50% for Thursday and about 60% for Friday. Any storms that do pop up could bring brief, spotty downpours on the order of a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain and some gusty winds, but widespread severe weather is not on the table. According to the National Weather Service, Friday is expected to be the hottest of the stretch, with highs near 87 and heat indices in the low to mid 90s, still below heat advisory criteria.
Heat And Safety
If you are planning to be outside Friday afternoon, treat it like a warm, sticky mid-summer day: drink water regularly, grab shade when you can, and keep an eye on older neighbors and people who work outdoors. If you need to cool off, you can track down an air-conditioned spot using the city’s Cool Options NYC map.
Coastal And Marine
Out on the water, a Small Craft Advisory is in effect for ocean waters east of Moriches Inlet through 2 p.m. Wednesday, with seas running around 5–6 feet early before gradually settling later in the day. A moderate rip current risk hangs on through Friday, so if you are beach-bound or heading out on a boat, stick to lifeguarded beaches and pay attention to posted warnings.
Weekend Outlook
The payoff for getting through Friday’s heat and hit-or-miss storms looks pretty decent. The weekend is expected to turn drier and seasonably warm, with highs near 82 on Saturday and around 85 on Sunday as humidity backs off behind Friday’s front. Winds should be lighter and storm chances lower heading into early next week.
