A four-year degree is not the admission ticket for every job inside New York City’s public school system. With the 2026-2027 school year approaching, NYC Public Schools is advertising support positions that could give applicants a way into school work without a college diploma.
PIX11 reports that several openings do not list education requirements, including school aide positions connected to schools such as Bronx Debate Academy, P.S. 166 The Richard Rodgers School, P79M Horan School and Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. The district’s official job board also shows 2026-2027 School Aide postings in multiple boroughs.
What School Aides Actually Do
This is not a classroom-teacher job disguised as an easy application. The NYC Public Schools listings describe school aides as helping relieve teachers of non-teaching duties, maintaining order in lunchrooms and hallways, handling supplies, assisting with routine clerical work and helping manage student arrivals and departures.
The listings also put the emphasis on reliability rather than academic credentials, calling for excellent attendance and punctuality along with the ability to work efficiently as part of a team, according to PIX11’s report. In other words, the job may not require a diploma from a college, but it does require showing up prepared to keep the school day from going sideways.
No Degree Does Not Mean No Requirements
There is some fine print behind the headline. NYC Public Schools says substitute paraprofessional applicants must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent, while substitute teachers must have a bachelor’s degree, making those separate career tracks from the school aide openings.
