Orlando International Airport has stretched its wings a bit farther. On Tuesday, the airport opened a new wing at Terminal C, adding five gates and shifting some international operations into the South terminal. Airport leaders marked the moment with a ribbon-cutting and said the expansion is designed to ease crowding across the already busy complex.

New gates and where they will serve

According to WFTV, the new wing brings five gates numbered 250 through 254. Airport officials say the gates are set up to handle both domestic and international flights. They add that this phase is meant to improve passenger flow and prepare the airport for future upgrades to Terminals A and B.

Virgin Atlantic and the gate technology

Industry reports note that Virgin Atlantic moved its Orlando operations to Terminal C on June 30, timed with the new wing going live. Airport Improvement reports that the gate complex includes Multiple Aircraft Ramp System, or MARS, positions that can either be configured as several narrow-body spots or set to accept widebody aircraft. That flexibility gives MCO more options when planning international schedules.

What the expansion adds to capacity

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority says this phase of Terminal C will allow the South terminal to handle roughly 10 to 12 million passengers a year and push total airport capacity closer to about 60 million travelers. As AviationPros notes, GOAA Chair Carson Good said, "Responding to passenger demand and supporting the dynamic growth in Central Florida have always been key elements to our phased development philosophy."

What travelers should know

Travelers, especially those booked on Virgin Atlantic, are urged to double-check which terminal they are using and confirm pickup and drop-off details with rental car companies, rideshare drivers and shuttle providers, in line with airport guidance. The Terminal C FAQs on FlyMCO spell out ground-transportation locations, parking garage options and other logistics for the South terminal campus.

The new wing is an early operational step in a multi-year plan to rebalance traffic across MCO and modernize older facilities as demand keeps growing. For the latest gate assignments and airline changes, the airport advises passengers to verify details with their carrier and with MCO before heading to the terminal.
