More than two years after a drive-by shooting shattered a Pageland family and left a 13-year-old boy dead, Chesterfield County deputies say they finally have suspects in custody.

On July 1, 2026, investigators announced they had charged 23-year-old Caleb Garcia with murder and a slate of weapons and assault counts, and had arrested 21-year-old Amber B. Moree on allegations that she helped after the crime. The victim, Jacob Duncan, was hit while inside a storage building beside his family’s home on Bennett Road in January 2024 and later died from his injuries.

Charges and the sheriff's statement

According to Chesterfield County deputies, Garcia is charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature and seven counts of first-degree assault and battery. Moree faces charges of accessory after the fact of murder, misprision and obstruction of justice.

Sheriff Cambo Streater said Jacob’s family “waited two years and five months for answers” and cast the arrests as the product of a long, methodical investigation. Those details came from the sheriff’s office and were reported by WSOC.

How the shooting unfolded

Deputies say shots were fired from a passing vehicle on Bennett Road, and responding officers found Jacob Duncan inside a storage building next to the residence. He later died at a hospital from his wounds.

The shooting happened in January 2024. Months afterward, Jacob’s family, together with a local group, put up reward money as investigators kept searching for leads, according to WBTV. The killing quickly became a focal point for Pageland residents, who pressed for answers while detectives tracked surveillance footage and worked witness tips.

Suspect's North Carolina case

Garcia was already in custody on the other side of the state line. In February 2024, he was arrested in North Carolina on an attempted first-degree murder charge tied to a separate shooting, according to a press release from the Union County Sheriff's Office.

U.S. Marshals helped with that arrest, and Garcia was held in Union County custody. Chesterfield County deputies told reporters he will be brought back to South Carolina to face the newly filed charges and said the investigation remains active and additional charges are possible, as reported by WSOC.

Investigators said they are continuing to coordinate with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and Union County authorities as they build the case.
