Miami Township police are asking for the public’s help to identify three women they say stole merchandise from a JCPenney, then used pepper spray on a store employee before taking off in a black Acura. Investigators say the car headed north on I-75, and they are treating the case as a robbery investigation. The department says detectives are actively following up on leads.

What police say

Per a post from the Miami Township Police Department, officers were called to the JCPenney on July 3 after staff reported a theft in progress and confronted three females inside the store. During that confrontation, one of the suspects allegedly used pepper spray on a loss-prevention employee before all three ran out and left in a black Acura.

Police say they tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver took off, operated the car recklessly, and continued north on I-75. Officers did not initiate a pursuit, according to the post.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Detective James Swearingen at 937-433-2301 or [email protected].

How to help

As reported by WHIO, the incident was initially recorded on June 29 in Miami Township police public materials. WHIO notes that Officer Kurtis Green is listed as an alternate contact at 937-433-2301 or [email protected].

According to WHIO, police have asked that anyone who recognizes the women, the vehicle, or who has video of the incident call investigators rather than approaching the suspects themselves.

Legal status and next steps

Miami Township police say all three women are wanted for questioning on potential robbery-related charges while detectives continue to gather evidence. In Ohio, robbery involves attempting or committing a theft and using or threatening force, according to the Ohio Revised Code. Prosecutors will decide on any formal charges after investigators present their findings.

Per WHIO, investigators are encouraging anyone with tips or relevant video to contact them and are urging the public not to confront the suspects. Police say anyone who believes they are in immediate danger should call 911.
