Philadelphia is baking on Saturday, July 4, with daytime highs near 100°F and heat-index values up to about 106°F. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through 8 p.m., and overnight lows in the mid-70s will offer little relief for many neighborhoods. Late-afternoon and evening storms are possible, which could add downpours and gusty winds to an already dangerous holiday.
Afternoon Into Evening
Most of the day will be hot and mostly sunny, with northwest winds around 5–10 mph and gusts up to 25 mph. A chance of showers and thunderstorms ramps up after about 3 p.m., with the greatest coverage expected in the evening. Some storms could produce heavy rain and damaging winds, according to NWS Mount Holly. If storms organize, localized flash flooding is possible where heavy rain repeatedly passes over the same neighborhoods.
Events, Cooling Options, and City Response
The city declared a Heat Health Emergency beginning July 1 and has opened more than 50 cooling centers, hydration stations, and extra water delivery for Welcome America and FIFA events, per the City of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging Heatline (215-765-9040) and 311 can help you locate an air-conditioned site, and pools and spraygrounds are also available across the parks system. Organizers say Fan Festival sites and the Parkway concert will feature misting tents, shaded areas, and staffed medical stations.
Travel, Fireworks, and Safety
If you are heading to parades, the Parkway concert, or fireworks, arrive early, carry water, and identify a cool-down spot, since heat exhaustion can come on fast and sudden storms could change plans. Never leave children or pets in parked cars and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat. Move activities indoors if you feel faint, nauseous, or disoriented. For the latest timing on storms and any cancellations, check updates from the National Weather Service or your event organizer.
