An Olympia man accused of smashing a woman in the head with a propane tank at a massive homeless encampment known as the Jungle was arrested after a tense SWAT standoff early Saturday. Officers forced their way into a barricaded apartment and subdued the suspect as body camera and raw arrest footage spread quickly online. Medics sedated the man at the scene before taking him to a hospital in custody.
Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders later shared body camera video of the operation in a Facebook post, according to The Olympian. The outlet reports Olympia officers had earlier responded to a call that a man struck a woman in the head with a propane tank at the Jungle, leaving her with serious injuries that may be permanently disfiguring. The sheriff’s post also notes the suspect has multiple prior assault convictions along with an active Department of Corrections escape warrant.
Raw video published by KIRO 7 shows officers using a chainsaw and a pepper ball device to breach the fortified apartment door while a K-9 moves in on the suspect. The clip also captures deputies ducking as the man hurls objects during the chaotic entry.
Arrest, Charges and Suspect History
Both the sheriff’s Facebook post and local coverage say the man was booked on suspicion of felony assault and arson, and that medics had to sedate him before transport to the hospital, The Olympian reports. Officials have not publicly released the suspect’s name or confirmed any formal charges. Prosecutors are expected to review the case before filing.
Encampment Context
The Jungle has long been a flashpoint for safety concerns in Olympia, drawing attention from both local and federal authorities over repeated violence and criminal activity. Earlier this month, U.S. Marshals found a missing child at the encampment, according to KIRO 7. Saturday’s arrest is likely to escalate pressure on city and county leaders already wrestling with how to handle the camp’s ongoing risks.
Court records and booking logs are expected to reflect any formal charges in the coming days. This story will be updated as new filings, official statements or additional footage are released.
