A routine traffic stop for code violations in Rancho Cordova on Wednesday turned into anything but routine when officers turned up a handgun, a container of fentanyl and several unused Narcan kits in the vehicle. A follow-up search of a motel room tied to the occupants uncovered a large sum of cash, drug-packaging equipment and multiple loaded semi-automatic handguns, and two people were arrested and taken to the county jail.
According to The Sacramento Bee, the Rancho Cordova Police Department said in a social-media post that a woman in the car was on searchable probation, which allowed officers to search the vehicle. The department reported that officers found a gun and several unused Narcan kits in the passenger compartment, then obtained information that led them to the motel room where the larger cache of cash, fentanyl-related supplies and additional firearms was discovered.
Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, is an opioid antidote used to reverse overdoses, and public-health officials say having it nearby can save lives, particularly given the potency of fentanyl. Officers frequently note Narcan kits at scenes where fentanyl is suspected, as first responders and community members increasingly carry the medication in case they need to respond to a potential overdose.
