A Commerce City man wanted on multiple felony warrants is back behind bars after a high-speed run along Highway 2 turned into a rooftop stunt and a midair surrender into officers' arms. The chase unfolded on Friday, with the department sharing video of the takedown the following day.
Chopper-Free, Rooftop Finale Caught on Department Video
According to a video posted by the Commerce City Police Department, officers from the department's south team chased a fleeing felon along Highway 2 before he tried one last escape move by scrambling up onto a nearby house. The clip shows officers surrounding the residence as the man paces on the roof, then finally climbs down and jumps into officers' outstretched arms to surrender. The department’s post states the suspect was wanted on several felony warrants, including an outstanding warrant connected to a fatal hit-and-run.
Felony Hit-and-Run: What the Law Says
Colorado law requires drivers involved in crashes that cause injury or death to stop and render aid, a duty spelled out in the Colorado Revised Statutes. Leaving the scene of a crash that results in death is treated as a serious felony under state law, and legal summaries note it can carry roughly four to 12 years in prison depending on the circumstances, per Colorado Legal Defense Group. In these cases, investigators typically work to corroborate witness video and nearby surveillance footage to determine who was driving and how the injuries were caused.
What the Video Shows, and What Comes Next
The police video ends with the suspect under arrest and does not identify him or show any apparent injuries. Prosecutors will decide whether to file additional charges or simply add counts to the existing felony warrants once investigators submit the case to the district attorney. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Commerce City Police Department tip line at 303-289-3626, per Denver7.
