A brush fire that scorched about 3.7 acres of open space near Bridgeway Court on June 6 could have been a whole lot worse, but Roseville neighbors and a patrolling motor officer helped shut it down fast. By Wednesday, police said they had their suspect in cuffs.
The City of Roseville Police Department identified the man as 50‑year‑old Jason Whitaker and said he was arrested on felony arson (Pen. Code §451(c)), felony vandalism (Pen. Code §594(b)(1)) and an under‑the‑influence charge (Health & Safety Code §11550), in a post on Facebook. According to police, a motor officer spotted Whitaker on a trail near the burned open space and detained him while Roseville Fire Department crews were still working to corral the flames.
How officers say they located the suspect
The department's Facebook post said, "community members provided timely, accurate suspect information that helped officers rapidly locate the individual," and police credit that tip for the quick arrest. Detectives say that information, along with surveillance footage and additional investigative follow‑up, also linked Whitaker to a recent broken‑window incident at a business in the Galleria area.
Charges and potential penalties
Under Penal Code section 451(c), arson of structures or forest land is a felony that can carry state‑prison exposure, per Justia. Vandalism charged under Penal Code section 594(b)(1) can be prosecuted as a felony when damage exceeds statutory thresholds, according to FindLaw. Being under the influence of a controlled substance is governed by Health & Safety Code section 11550; the statute and jury‑instruction guidance are outlined by Justia.
What's next for the case
Whitaker was booked following the arrest and remains in custody while prosecutors and the court determine formal filings and arraignment dates in Placer County. Roseville police publicly thanked community members for the tips that helped officers rapidly locate the suspect and urged anyone with additional information to contact the department.
