A retail theft investigation targeting Ulta Beauty stores around Sacramento ended with a home search, a table full of seized cosmetics and guns, and one man under arrest, according to authorities.
Sacramento police, working with the California Highway Patrol’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force, served a search warrant at a city residence and say they found suspected stolen beauty products along with multiple firearms. Investigators identified the suspect as Andrew Byrd and say he was taken into custody on suspicion of organized retail theft and firearms violations tied to alleged thefts from Ulta locations across the area.
According to FOX40, Byrd is suspected of stealing about $6,000 in merchandise from Ulta Beauty stores. During the search, officers reported finding three unregistered firearms, including a 7.62-caliber draco-style pistol. A second person at the home, identified as Kenado Bird, was arrested on firearm-related charges during the operation, FOX40 reported. The outlet also noted that Byrd was booked on organized retail theft and related firearm counts, and that booking and court records were not yet available.
Search Warrant Yields Firearms and Stolen Goods
The bust is part of a broader push by the CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force to crack down on booster crews and fencing operations that move stolen goods, according to CA.gov. State officials say the task force has been teaming up with local departments to serve search warrants, haul back large amounts of suspected stolen merchandise, and hit the infrastructure that gets those items off store shelves and into illicit resale channels. The effort, they say, is aimed at protecting retailers and cutting into the profit pipelines that make organized theft worth the risk.
Local Pattern and Retailer Impact
Stores around the Sacramento region have reported a series of coordinated thefts this year, including earlier arrests tied to Ulta and Bath & Body Works locations, The Sacramento Bee reported. In those cases, law enforcement said crews often grab armfuls of high-value merchandise, sometimes using store totes or bags, then bolt for the door in a matter of seconds. The pattern has pushed retailers and police into closer coordination, with loss-prevention teams and officers working together to track suspects, recover stock, and return stolen goods when they can.
Prosecutors can charge organized retail theft and related gun offenses under beefed-up state enforcement efforts and recent property-crime legislation, officials say. The Governor’s Office has promoted those changes as giving law enforcement more tools to go after fencing operations and to bring more felony cases against repeat offenders, according to CA.gov. Charges tied to unregistered firearms and weapons enhancements can sharply increase potential penalties while prosecutors review the evidence.
Sacramento police and the CHP have not released additional information about Byrd’s court dates or how far-reaching the investigation might be. FOX40 reported that investigators were still processing evidence and that more details could be made public as the case moves forward.
