Salem has officially cut ties with CodeRED this week, rolling out Regroup as the city’s new emergency-notification system and offering texts, automated calls and emails about road closures, water advisories and other urgent messages. Officials said contact information for people already signed up for CodeRED will be moved automatically, but they urged everyone, including residents, workers, visitors and students, to confirm their subscriptions. Subscribers were told they should receive a welcome call from (978) 745-9595 on Tuesday. To enroll, text JOIN SALEMALERT to 58339 or sign up through the city's Regroup page.
What Regroup Will Do
According to City of Salem, Regroup will deliver targeted emergency alerts about public-safety incidents, road closures and water notifications. The city also notes that people previously enrolled in CodeRED will have phone numbers and emails migrated automatically, and registering does not require creating an account unless users want one to manage their notification preferences.
How To Sign Up And The Welcome Call
The Salem Police Department on Facebook announced the rollout and reminded residents that anyone who received a welcome call from (978) 745-9595 is already subscribed, while people who did not receive the call should enroll. The post also spelled out the mobile keyword, instructing users to text JOIN SALEMALERT to 58339, and pointed readers to the city's online registration page.
Why The City Switched
The switch follows reliability problems and a nationwide cybersecurity incident involving the CodeRED vendor earlier this year, which the city flagged in January. In a January notice the city said contact data may have been exposed and advised residents to change reused passwords, and the Regroup rollout is part of the effort to restore a dependable notification channel, per City of Salem.
What Residents Should Do Now
Residents are encouraged to check their call logs for the welcome number and confirm preferred contact methods in Regroup so they will receive alerts during emergencies. If you reused your CodeRED password elsewhere, the city recommends changing it and using a unique password for safety.
