A long-running downtown Fargo homicide case is finally back in a local courtroom. A 22-year-old man charged in last summer’s downtown shooting made his first appearance in Cass County on July 7 after being arrested in Minneapolis, and investigators say a sealed warrant plus federal muscle were critical in tracking him down. Judge Wade Webb ordered $1,000,000 cash-only bail and set a preliminary hearing for Aug. 6. The Aug. 3, 2025, shooting killed Azeem Holmes and injured two others, and police say the investigation is still very much alive. The defendant waived extradition in Hennepin County and was moved to the Cass County Jail ahead of the hearing.
Sealed warrant kept search quiet
Fargo detectives say they deliberately kept the arrest warrant under wraps so the suspect would not catch wind of the case closing in and to protect both evidence and public safety. "We didn't want to publicly advertise that we were looking for him because we felt enough time had passed by that point that he probably thought we weren't looking for him," Capt. Matthew Christensen told reporters, according to Valley News Live. Officials say the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office asked a judge to seal the warrant so details would not leak and jeopardize the work. Investigators argue that low-profile approach let them quietly map out suspects’ routines and eventually concentrate surveillance that led to the arrest.
How the arrest unfolded
Authorities say the U.S. Marshals Service North Star Fugitive Task Force found and arrested Jayvon Allen at a Minneapolis residence on June 24 after months of combing through video and chasing down leads, according to KVRR. Fargo investigators provided possible addresses, and the task force conducted surveillance before moving in, making the arrest quietly and without any public announcement. After a Minnesota court appearance, Allen waived extradition and was transferred back into Cass County custody to face state charges. Police say the case stems from an escalating dispute but maintain they have not established any gang-related motive for the killing.
Charges and court next steps
Prosecutors have charged Allen with murder with extreme indifference, aggravated assault for firing into a crowd, aggravated assault causing permanent loss or impairment, and reckless endangerment with a firearm. At the July 7 hearing, Judge Webb set the $1,000,000 cash-only bond, according to Valley News Live. Defense attorneys told the court Allen did not know a sealed warrant was out for him and argued he acted in self-defense. He was appointed a public defender, and the preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 6. The judge also issued a no-contact order for the two people wounded in the Aug. 3, 2025, downtown shooting. Prosecutors said they pushed for the steep cash bond because of how long it took to find Allen, his lack of local ties, and what they described as strong evidence placing him at the scene.
Investigation continues
Fargo Police say the investigation is ongoing and are again urging anyone with information, including video or eyewitness accounts from that night, to contact the department, per Prairie Public. Detectives plan to keep digging through surveillance footage and digital records as the case heads toward the preliminary hearing. Local officials have stressed public safety and are asking residents to share any tips that might help bring more clarity for the victims’ families. As the criminal process moves forward, upcoming court filings and hearings will shape how the evidence is laid out and challenged in front of a judge.
