With Independence Day weekend closing in, the Seguin Fire Department is sounding the alarm: leave the fireworks outside city limits. In a Thursday message to residents, fire officials warned that consumer fireworks inside the city are a serious fire risk in Seguin's fast-growing neighborhoods and can cause major distress for pets and people living with trauma. Instead, the department is steering folks toward organized shows or celebrations outside the corporate limits, rather than backyard launch pads.
City Rules And Penalties
According to the City of Seguin, it is illegal to possess or set off fireworks inside the city limits. If you do, officials say you "will lose [your] fireworks and receive a citation up to $2,000." The department also reminds residents that the rule does not stop at the edge of town. The prohibition covers areas within 5,000 feet of the city limits, and the city outlines basic safety tips for anyone who decides to celebrate legally outside that boundary.
Where The Danger Is Highest
Fire officials are especially worried about newer subdivisions where houses sit closer together and yards can dry out fast. Arroyo Ranch, Cordova Crossing, Greenfield, Greenspoint Heights and Hannah Heights were all singled out as places where a stray spark could more easily catch a lawn or a structure. The Seguin Economic Development Council's housing map lists these neighborhoods as active or under construction, underscoring how quickly the city's outer edges are filling in. The municipal prohibition on fireworks is written into city code in Sec. 74‑70, which provides the legal backbone for enforcement.
Pets, Veterans And Public Safety
In a short Facebook reel, the Seguin Fire Department also called out another problem: the toll fireworks can take on pets and on veterans or active‑duty service members living with PTSD. The ASPCA notes that fireworks can trigger intense fear and dangerous behaviors in animals. The VA's National Center for PTSD adds that sudden loud noises and bright flashes can act as powerful trauma reminders for some veterans, turning a neighborhood show into a serious mental health challenge.
How To Celebrate Legally And Safely
City leaders are urging residents to stick with organized, permitted fireworks displays or to use private property outside the corporate limits if they plan on lighting consumer fireworks at all. The city has said the Fire and Police departments will work together on enforcement over the holiday period, so guessing where the line is may not end well. Residents can confirm whether their home is inside city limits by using the online boundary tool on the City of Seguin city limits map or by checking local event listings for professionally supervised shows.
Legal Consequences
For anyone tempted to roll the dice, the municipal code is clear. Enforcement can include confiscation of fireworks and civil citations, and each day a person stays in violation counts as a separate offense. Penalties can reach up to $2,000, and officers are authorized under the Seguin code to seize fireworks as part of that enforcement.
