An early-morning drive on Seibert Road in Amite turned into a double DWI case, with one passenger clinging to critical condition in intensive care and two drivers ending up in custody, authorities said.
Crash details
According to a news release from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies were called shortly before 7 a.m. to a single-vehicle crash on Seibert Road. Four people were inside the car, investigators said.
The sheriff's office reported that a 21-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition. A 22-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were treated for minor injuries, according to the same release. Deputies are still working to piece together how the wreck happened.
Arrests and charges
The driver, identified by the sheriff's office as 27-year-old Dusti Brown of Amite, was booked on charges that include DWI, reckless operation and vehicular negligent injury, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said.
As separately reported by WDSU, deputies also discovered another motorist, 18-year-old Mason Simpson, passed out in his vehicle along the same roadway. Simpson was arrested on a DWI charge. Officials told reporters the two incidents are not believed to be connected.
What the charges mean
Louisiana law gives prosecutors room to file more serious counts when impairment is tied to severe injury. First-degree vehicular negligent injuring applies when impairment causes serious bodily harm, while reckless operation is a separate crime with its own range of penalties. See the state statutes for specifics, including R.S. 14:39.2 and R.S. 14:99, as outlined by FindLaw and Justia.
The sheriff’s office underscored the role of restraints, saying that “wearing seat belts correctly can be the difference between life and death,” and urged drivers and passengers alike to buckle up. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office asked anyone with information about the crash to contact its public information office as the investigation continues.
Local prosecutors will review the sheriff’s investigative file before formal charges are set, and officials have not released further details. WDSU reported the initial account of the incident.
