Monday night traffic on Seminole Boulevard turned tragic when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Seminole Boulevard and 50th Avenue North, leaving one driver dead and a front-seat passenger fighting for life. Deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said the agency’s Major Accident Investigation Team, known as MAIT, arrived at about 6:02 p.m. to take over the scene, handle reconstruction and collect evidence. The SUV driver was checked out roadside and was not hurt, while the other vehicle’s passenger was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

In a post on X, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened at about 6:02 p.m. and identified the drivers as 85-year-old James Crane III, who was behind the wheel of a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, and 18-year-old Lily Preston, who was driving a 2021 Genesis GV80. According to deputies, Crane was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m. The same release said the PT Cruiser’s front-seat passenger, 20-year-old Dacosta Crane, was transported and remains on life support, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
What investigators say
MAIT investigators say early reconstruction points to the PT Cruiser failing to yield while turning west onto 50th Avenue North, cutting into the path of the Genesis as it moved through the intersection. The sheriff’s office noted that impairment and speed do not appear to have played a role in the crash and said next of kin for those involved have been notified, per the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Seminole Boulevard's recent crashes
This deadly collision is the latest in a run of serious wrecks along busy Seminole Boulevard this year. In March, Hoodline reported a Seminole Boulevard Street Race Horror that investigators said involved an SUV hitting close to 91 mph. By June, the corridor was back in the headlines with a separate Deadly Largo Skateboard Crash that killed a rider and led to DUI and leaving-the-scene charges. As the crashes add up, local safety advocates and law enforcement have been calling for tougher enforcement and engineering fixes along the stretch.
What comes next
MAIT’s work on reconstruction and evidence gathering is still underway, and investigators say the case will be turned over to prosecutors if they determine criminal charges are appropriate. The Office of the State Attorney for the Sixth Judicial Circuit is responsible for felony prosecutions in Pinellas County, including cases that grow out of fatal traffic crashes, according to the State Attorney's Office. Under Florida law, crash reports must be filed with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, and certain reports are shielded from public release for 60 days while investigations are in progress, the agency says.
