A high-speed collision at a South Side intersection left two drivers with potentially life-threatening injuries Friday morning and sent a 2-year-old to the hospital for evaluation, according to San Antonio police.
The crash unfolded around 10:51 a.m. at Elmo Avenue and S. Zarzamora, where two Chevrolets collided and were left heavily damaged. Emergency crews shut down the intersection while traffic investigators documented the scene and cleared the wreckage.
The San Antonio Police Department told KENS5 that a 31-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Camaro was heading south in the left lane on S. Zarzamora when a 26-year-old woman in a Chevrolet Cruze tried to turn left from eastbound Elmo onto northbound S. Zarzamora. The Camaro hit the Cruze on the driver’s side.
Officers said both drivers were transported to a hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. A 2-year-old child riding in the back seat of the Cruze was properly secured in a child safety seat and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Investigators said surveillance video captured the Camaro traveling at a high rate of speed shortly before impact. Detectives stayed at the intersection into the afternoon, reconstructing the crash while neighbors looked on and described a heavy emergency response as crews cleared debris and tow trucks hauled the mangled vehicles away. Police have not released the names of those involved or specified which hospitals are treating them.
Investigation and Safety Context
SAPD’s Traffic Investigation Detail is leading the probe. The department told KENS5 that criminal charges against the Camaro driver are possible, depending on what the final review of evidence shows.
The wreck adds to a series of serious crashes along the Zarzamora corridor, which has been identified as a high-injury stretch and targeted for safety upgrades. For a deeper look at the corridor’s crash history, see Zarzamora corridor flagged as high-injury.
Investigators are asking anyone with dash-cam, door-cam or other video from the area around the time of the crash to preserve it and share it with detectives. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers or by contacting the San Antonio Police Department’s non-emergency lines for traffic-related information.
