An early-morning fire jolted a Commerce City apartment complex awake on Tuesday, sending five people to the hospital but stopping short of becoming a building-wide disaster, thanks in large part to the sprinkler system that kicked in when things went sideways.
The South Adams County Fire Department said crews were called to an apartment complex near East 62nd Avenue and Glencoe Street around 4:40 a.m. Firefighters quickly confined the blaze to a single unit, and five people were transported to area hospitals with smoke-related injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to CBS Colorado.
Sprinklers Credited With Keeping Fire in Check
Fire officials said the building’s sprinkler system “played a critical role in slowing the fire’s spread and limiting damage,” buying firefighters valuable time and keeping the flames from jumping to neighboring units. Photos from the scene showed damage centered on a single apartment, with crews working to ventilate smoke and secure the area, as reported by CBS Colorado.
Why Sprinklers Make Such a Big Difference
Fire sprinklers have long been credited with turning what could be full-building catastrophes into far more contained incidents. A 2024 NFPA analysis summarized by The Pew Charitable Trusts found that residential sprinklers control fires about 98% of the time and keep them contained to the room where they started roughly 96% of the time. Properties with sprinklers also see substantially lower death and injury rates than buildings without them.
What Happens Next for Residents
Investigators are continuing to probe how the Commerce City fire started and have said they will release more details as they become available.
