Rain and thunder crashed the party in downtown St. Louis on Saturday, forcing organizers of Celebrate St. Louis to cancel America’s Birthday Parade under the Gateway Arch and tell crowds to clear the grounds as storms rolled in. The call came just ahead of the planned 4 p.m. step-off, abruptly halting a day of concerts and events promoted as Celebrate 250.
According to Celebrate Saint Louis, the event’s webpage flipped to a blunt message reading “Parade Canceled — Due To Weather” and urged visitors to leave the Arch grounds. Organizers issued the clear-out order just before 4 p.m. and told people to seek shelter as a line of storms pushed toward downtown, as reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Storms and warnings
The National Weather Service’s St. Louis office showed active severe thunderstorm alerts across the region through the afternoon, while an extreme heat warning stayed in place into the evening. Radar and hazard products from the National Weather Service in St. Louis highlighted a band of heavy storms moving toward downtown in mid-afternoon, a scenario officials pointed to when they put outdoor programming on pause.
What is still planned tonight
Celebrate organizers said they “remain hopeful that conditions will improve and that we will be able to safely move forward with today’s Celebrate 250 festivities” and emphasized that the parade was canceled “out of an abundance of caution,” according to Celebrate Saint Louis. For now, the weekend schedule still lists headline concerts, a 1,500-drone aerial show and a fireworks finale set for about 9:40 p.m., with final go or no-go decisions tied to ongoing safety checks.
Anyone at the Arch grounds or along the downtown parade route is urged to follow instructions from event staff and law enforcement, head indoors when asked and keep an eye on official updates. Before trekking back outside, residents can review the latest advisories and radar on the NWS St. Louis page.
