Atlanta police are asking for the public’s help to track down a man wanted in an armed carjacking that started as a routine online marketplace meetup. The holdup happened July 1 at 3627 Forrest Park Road Southwest in southwest Atlanta. The victim’s vehicle was taken at gunpoint, but the victim was not injured.
Police Release Details Of The Case
According to investigators, the victim had arranged to meet the suspect to sell a computer system. After the transaction, police say the suspect pulled out a firearm and stole the victim’s vehicle. Officers later recovered the vehicle and confirmed the victim was not hurt, but the suspect is still on the run as detectives continue their investigation, according to 95.5 WSB. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Atlanta Police Department.
Marketplace Meetups Can Turn Risky
Crimes linked to in-person meetups arranged through online marketplaces have been popping up across the country, ranging from scams to armed robberies, as criminals use listings to zero in on potential victims. The Better Business Bureau has flagged vehicle-related scams and urged buyers and sellers to verify payments and avoid off-platform deals, while investigative reports have highlighted how marketplace systems can be twisted by fraudsters. Together, those trends highlight the risk of meeting strangers in quiet, out-of-the-way spots for a quick sale.
How To Stay Safe During Exchanges
Police and consumer advocates recommend meeting in busy, well-lit public areas or at designated “safe exchange” zones at police precincts. Local guidance for Atlanta outlines precinct exchange areas and other basic precautions.
