Tampa woke up hot and sticky Wednesday, with clear skies, temperatures hovering near 80°F, and dewpoints stuck in the mid-70s. By Wednesday afternoon, the mercury is expected to climb into the mid-90s, and the heat index could spike to roughly 105 to 106°F, making long stints outside a bad idea without shade, breaks, and plenty of water.
Afternoon Heat And Isolated Storms
Most of the day will stay mostly sunny, with a high near 96°F, and just a low chance of a quick shower or thunderstorm after noon as sea-breeze storms try to bubble up inland. Slightly drier air slipping into the region will keep rain chances on the lower side through Thursday, even while the humidity keeps things feeling downright oppressive, according to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay, which expects heat index values to peak around 106°F today.
On The Ground
The most brutal stretch of heat will hit from midday into mid-afternoon, so outdoor work is best handled early in the morning or closer to sunset. If you have to be outside, take frequent water breaks, grab shade when you can, and never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a short errand.
The city has opened cooling stations at neighborhood community centers for anyone who needs air-conditioned relief. Residents are urged to confirm locations and hours before heading out, according to Spectrum Bay News 9.
Rest Of The Week
Temperatures are expected to hold in the mid to upper 90s through Friday, with Thursday and Friday shaping up to be the hottest days as the drier pattern hangs on. Moisture starts to creep back in late Friday into the weekend, which should bring higher storm coverage south of the Tampa metro. A weak front early next week could nudge rain chances higher Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay.
