Two late-night shootings in the Cheyenne Mountain Estates neighborhood in mid-May have led to multiple felony charges for a 17-year-old, according to authorities. The incidents, reported on May 11 and in the early hours of May 12, damaged a home and several vehicles but caused no reported injuries. Investigators later identified a suspect, made an arrest, and forwarded charges to prosecutors.
What investigators say
In a Facebook post, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said the El Paso County Regional Communications Center first received a report of gunfire near the 8100 block of Piute Road on May 11. Deputies arrived to find multiple rounds had struck a residence and several nearby vehicles.
According to the post, deputies were not able to locate any suspects that night. The victim contacted dispatch again at about 2:30 a.m. on May 12, reporting that people had come back and were banging on the front door. A vehicle fled the scene, then returned twice more, and additional shots were fired during those returns, the sheriff's office said.
Detectives, working with the Colorado Springs Police Department, executed multiple search warrants on May 27, according to the sheriff's office. The suspect was later found, arrested, and booked into the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center on June 22.
Investigators said they established probable cause to recommend that the teen be charged with two counts of attempted murder, three counts of menacing, criminal mischief, unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited use of weapons, reckless endangerment, and third-degree criminal trespassing.
Legal implications
Because the suspect is under 18, many records and hearings in the case are likely to be restricted under Colorado law. The Colorado Judicial Branch notes that juvenile court records are generally confidential, with access limited to specific parties and circumstances.
How prosecutors choose to move forward, and whether filings will be public or sealed, will follow standard juvenile charging procedures in the coming weeks.
Neighborhood context
Cheyenne Mountain Estates is an unincorporated residential pocket along Piute Road that falls under the El Paso County Sheriff's Office rather than Colorado Springs police. Neighbors in the area have long paid close attention to crime and safety issues. Previous local reporting has described the Piute Road corridor as a mix of mobile homes and rural residential properties in unincorporated El Paso County.
What comes next
According to the sheriff's Facebook post, investigators are asking anyone with information about the shootings to contact the office. Prosecutors have not yet posted a public court calendar entry for the case. Upcoming court dates and related documents will mark the next public steps in the case.
