
A two-week homicide investigation in West Baltimore ended with a traffic stop and a murder charge for a 38-year-old man now accused in a deadly Sandtown-Winchester shooting.
Police say Derek DeShields Jr., 38, was taken into custody on July 13 in connection with the June 30 killing of 41-year-old Roderick Coney. Coney was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and later died at an area hospital.
According to the Baltimore Police Department, officers stopped DeShields in the 600 block of North Washington Street during a traffic stop, then transported him to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged with first-degree murder. The department also posted the arrest advisory on X.
As reported by Baltimore Witness, the shooting happened around 7:35 p.m. on June 30 in the 1300 block of Stockton Street in Sandtown-Winchester. Officers arrived to find Coney with multiple gunshot wounds, and medics later pronounced him dead at an area hospital.

Homicide detectives quickly took over the case and say leads that developed in the days after the shooting ultimately led to DeShields’ arrest during the July 13 traffic stop, according to the Baltimore Police Department.

DeShields is charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Central Booking Intake Facility pending prosecution.
